The primary function of an ice maker is to produce ice cubes or crushed ice for use in beverages or for other purposes. The ice maker contains a water supply line connected to the household water supply, a water inlet valve, an ice mold or tray, and a mechanism for ejecting the ice cubes once they are formed.

Most modern ice makers are fully automatic and operate independently of user intervention. When the ice maker detects that the ice bin is empty or low on ice, it activates the water inlet valve to fill the ice mold with water. The water is then frozen into ice cubes by a cooling system within the refrigerator.

The ice bin or storage compartment within the refrigerator serves as a reservoir for storing the produced ice cubes. Depending on the refrigerator model, the ice maker may dispense ice cubes directly into a dispenser located on the exterior of the refrigerator door, or users may manually access the ice from the bin inside the freezer compartment.
